Alexander Biryukov has a comprehensive track of practicing law - prior to starting the academic career he served as Deputy District Prosecutor in Odessa region (Ukraine), Legal Counselor for the Construction of Odessa's Nuclear Power Station, in-house counselor at "Diamant Co. Ltd." - the biggest maritime agency in Odessa and various state and private companies.
After joining the Institute of International Relations of Kyiv National University Professor Biryukov developed various comparative commercial and international law courses including Bankruptcy & International Insolvency, Banking, Investment Law, Securities and Commodity & Stock Exchanges Regulations some of which were unknown before in Ukraine. He taught and currently teaches those university courses at leading Ukrainian law schools.
As Civic Education Project Lecturer Alexander Biryukov taught the Introduction to U.S. Bankruptcy Law in English for students of Kiev National University in 1996. In 2000 based on the students' evaluation Professor Biryukov was awarded the title "The Best Law Professor of Ukrainian Center for Legal Studies (the Law School) of 1999/2000 academic year" - the highest recognition of teaching skills.
Professor Biryukov has a significant background in the field of law. He received his Master of Arts in Law with highest honors in U.S. Marketing Law from the People's Friendship University named after Patrice Lumumba (Moscow) in 1984 and Doctorate Degree in comparative bankruptcy law from Kiev National University in 1999.
Alexander Biryukov is a leading scholar in Ukraine in the sphere of bankruptcy law. He has written numerous articles of various bankruptcy and commercial law topics. A.Biryukov is an author of the monograph on Bankruptcy Law: Comparative Analysis (the U.S., German, Russian and Ukrainian theory and legislation) based on his doctoral thesis. His monograph was the first in this sphere of comparative bankruptcy law in Ukraine and the second in the Newly Independent States. He also contributed the chapter on International Insolvency Law for the book on Private International Law in Ukraine (2002 edition).
In 1997 and 1998 Professor Biryukov has received the highest awards from Ukrainian BIZNES Weekly for the best articles on foreign and international law.
Alexander Biryukov got an extensive research experience. He was a 1996 Grantee of the Council of Europe for doing a research on private law at the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law - UNIDROIT (Rome, Italy) and got IREX fellowship to continue his research in 1997. 2000/2001 academic year Professor Biryukov was a Visiting Scholar on Fulbright Lecturing and Researching Program at New York University School of Law.
Professor Biryukov is closely involved in the commercial law reform in Ukraine consulting numerous working groups for revision of Collateral and Bankruptcy Law, participated in drafting the new Civil Code of Ukraine. He is also a key member of the working party for drafting the Model Law on Securities Market for the countries of CIS.
In 1997 Alexander Biryukov was awarded honorary title Kentucky Colonel in recognition of his work as a jurist. His is a member of American Bankruptcy Institute and for several years has been an associate member of the Business Section of American Bar Association.
Currently he works on a book on International Bankruptcy Law, the students' textbooks for his courses and the book "Doing Business in Ukraine" for Juris Publication Inc.
